Five Foreign TV Shows To Add to Your Netflix Queue

netflix queue

I love foreign TV, maybe because that is what I grew up watching or maybe it's because it is something different, not sure, but my netflix queue is filled with loads of shows from across the Atlantc. Here are five of my favorites that you should add to your queue.

Sherlock. In my opinion, the best adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes detective series. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and Dr Watson. It is smart, funny and full of suspense. A hit with everyone I have introduced to the show. To call it a tv show seems inadequate - each episode is 90 mins long, so they are more like mini movies. You can find the first three seasons on netflix. Season 4 is in the works.

Luther. Starring Idris Elba - do you really need any more convincing?  Idris Elba stares as DCI John Luther. His dedication to finding the truth hinges on obssessive to the detriment of himself (and everyone he loves) and he goes right up to the edge (of right versus wrong) to solve a case. His methods almost makes you want to loathe him, but you can't , because - Idris Elba. Then there is the character of Alice Morgan (played by Ruth Wilson), who I can only describe as a John Luther's blessing (and curse). Watch it, love it, thank me.

Wallander. Not the british adaptation starring Kenneth Branagh (although that version is great), but the swedish version with subtitles. I know, subtitles?  Yes - It is that good. It follows Swedish detective - Kurt Wallander as he solves crimes in the Swedish town of Ystad. His character is brillant and flawed, but not in the overdone way you see on a lot of TV shows these days.

Keeping up Appearances. I was a little apprehensive to include this on the list because humor from across the pond tends not to translate as well here and vice versa, but it is such a funny show, so add it to your list. The 45 episodes capture the daily shenanigans of Hyacinth Bucket (pronouced "Bouquet") as she takes proper etiquette to an insane (but funny) level.

Broadchurch. This mini series is set in a small coastal town. The series starts out with a body of a young child on the beach and there begins the "whodunit" journey. This is literarily one of those edge of your seat shows - just when you think they got the culprit, then comes another twist and by the end of the show - your jaw drops when and how the culprit is found. There is a U.S. adaption currently running on Fox TV titled Gracepoint. David Tennant (Dr Who) returns in the lead character role in the adaptation. I have my fingers crossed that it is as good as the original. Unfortunately, you cannot stream it on Netflix (yet), you have to go old school and have a copy mailed to you.
